Bali, Indonesia

Canggu, Ubud, Uluwatu, and Sanur, broken down block by block for 2026.

Neighborhood by Neighborhood

Canggu

12 to 18 million IDR / month (roughly 760 to 1,140 USD) for a private one bedroom villa with pool.

The nomad capital of the island. Dozens of coworking spaces including Dojo Bali (1.8 million IDR / month unlimited access) and cafes built for laptops. Best internet, best community, highest prices. Increasingly, you are paying for the address as much as the square footage.

Ubud

8 to 14 million IDR / month (roughly 505 to 885 USD) for comparable space.

Rice paddies instead of beach clubs, a slower pace, strong yoga and arts community. Outpost Ubud coworking runs about 2 million IDR / month including community dinners. Good fit for people who find Canggu's social pace exhausting after the first couple of months.

Uluwatu and Bingin

10 to 16 million IDR / month (roughly 635 to 1,015 USD).

Dramatic clifftop scenery, a growing surf and wellness crowd, but a thinner coworking scene than Canggu. Works best if you are genuinely comfortable working from a villa desk most days rather than needing a cafe or coworking space daily.

Sanur and Denpasar

6 to 10 million IDR / month (roughly 380 to 635 USD).

The under the radar option. Quieter, more local, close to the island's best hospitals and clinics. Fewer beach clubs, fewer Instagram backdrops, meaningfully lower rent for similar square footage.

Tax note: a four year exemption on foreign sourced income exists under PMK 18/2021 for qualifying foreign experts, but it is not automatic, requires a specific professional category and formal application, and enforcement has been inconsistent through 2025 and 2026. The Scores

7.6 / 10

Geo-Metric Score

Strong infrastructure in the established nomad corridors, real healthcare access near Sanur and Denpasar, but traffic, seasonal flooding, and waste management strain are real and worsening in Canggu specifically.

6.7 / 10

Efficiency Score

Genuine legal visa pathway now exists, but the 60,000 USD income floor locks out lower earners, the tax exemption is not guaranteed, and Canggu rents carry a real hype premium over comparable neighborhoods.

Honest Friction, Month Three

Traffic and infrastructure. Canggu's roads were not built for its current population density. What was a ten minute scooter ride two years ago can now take twenty five during peak hours.
Wet season flooding. October through March brings drainage problems in low lying parts of Canggu and Seminyak. Ask specifically about flood history before signing a lease.
Visa runs and paperwork fatigue. Even on the E33G, renewal admin and NPWP tax registration add a recurring administrative load that catches people off guard after the honeymoon period ends.
Community turnover. The nomad crowd cycles fast. Deep friendships take more deliberate effort here than the Instagram version of Bali suggests.

Honest Opinion

Canggu earned its reputation, but it is also the neighborhood where you will most feel the cost of that reputation. If budget matters more to you than proximity to the loudest beach clubs, Sanur or inland Ubud deliver nearly the same lifestyle for meaningfully less, with a friction profile most nomads come to prefer by month three anyway. The visa and tax picture is genuinely better than it was three years ago, but the four year tax exemption is not the guarantee some corners of the internet make it sound like. Verify before you plan around it.
